A Porch Pot That Survives a Busy Week

Watch the light for a day
Notice when the porch gets direct sun and when the rail or roof casts shade. A plant labeled for full sun is unlikely to thrive in a dim corner, however good the pot looks there.
Give water a way out
Use a container with drainage and place a saucer where runoff would stain the surface. Fill it with a suitable potting mix rather than compacted garden soil, then water until the mix is evenly moist.
Make the routine small
Choose one visible plant before arranging a collection. Check the top layer of soil on two regular days each week; water according to what you feel, not just the calendar.

Start with plants labeled for shade and confirm the label's light requirements against your actual porch.
