Measure the moving space
Check the full arc of the door and the walking clearance with a chair in place. A narrow corner may work better with a compact chair than a wide bench.
Find a landing spot
A small, steady surface for a cup or book makes the seat easier to use. Put it where you can reach it without leaning over a railing or blocking a step.
Keep the fabrics honest
Use materials suited to the exposure and bring cushions inside when conditions require it. A simple seat without outdoor textiles is often the easier year-round choice.
How much room should I leave by the door?
Leave enough room for the door to open completely and for someone to pass comfortably; measure your actual door and path.
